I tend to watch anime that has an interesting plot. Anime with hereos, a little love interest, adventure, villians, etc is what I like.

It's not always appropriate. I draw the line when it comes to how much gore it has. I also don't like sex in anime and manga. Such as: Basilisk - I REALLY wanna watch the series and read the manga, but it's just too gory. Inuyasha has lots of blood, but not too much for me to handle. Fushigi Yuugi has violence and....well, how to say this...i wouldn't call it "sex". I'd just call it "passionate love". but Fushigi yuugi and Inuyasha are 2 of my fav. series. so, i draw the line when the series is either a bloodbath or just plain hentai.

It seems like the only people who want to learn Japanese are teenagers/young adults that watch too much anime.

Are there any Engllish speakers here who have learned it for business or other purposes?

I started learning it because I love foreign languages and I wanted to learn an Asian language (and all the future-investment-bankers were taking Chinese and I didn't want to be in a class with them). I currently live here (where it's 5:10 AM - I am up really late, not really early) and I'm a degree-candidate student in a PhD program in Japanese literature (i.e. I take the same classes with and am graded according to the same standards as native speakers. Which is why I am up late - six papers due tomorrow!). I also teach beginner and intermediate Japanese in the foreign exchange student program here and I teach two undergraduate seminars (Classical Japanese and a lit. theory overview), both in Japanese. I also really really really hate manga and anime, except in extremely rare cases where the work has artistic merit on its own (i.e. barefoot gen, which is about the atomic bomb - actually, I think that might be it).

What another person said here is true - there is a difference between wanting to learning and working to learn it, and I am sure that she is a very hard worker and is doing very well with it. I will only say this: in my experiences as both a student and a teacher of the Japanese language, the further you progress, the less your classmates seem to care about manga and anime. Those that begin to study Japanese because they like manga and anime do not seem to progress as far or stick with it for as long. Literally, Columbia (where I did my undergrad & M.A.) has over 300 people in first year Japanese, fewer than 20 in 4th year, and when I took 5th year, there were 6 of us, half of us were native speakers, and none of us had any interest in manga and anime, and in my time there, there was nobody in the M.A. or PhD Japanese studies program that had any interest in it either.

Also, a lot of manga-influenced students become very disheartened and depressed when they study abroad and realize that hardcore manga and anime fandom is also a subculture here - a bigger one, but one that most people still think is weird (I am being 100% serious; this is a big problem that study abroad programs have been dealing with lately).

So yes, we are out there, and yes, we are in the minority, but we're also usually the ones who wind up translating the anime and manga into English for extra money (I speak from experience).

Note: This is not to discourage anyone from studying Japanese for any reason, although please keep your manga-influenced questions to your teacher to a minimum if at all possible ;-)
